FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy with Kim Jones in California

  • What type of clients do you work with?

I work with adults, young adults, teens and couples. My practice supports clients navigating life transitions, anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and relationship challenges including divorce, communication issues and parenting struggles and more.

  • What can I expect during the first session?

Our first session is focused on getting to know you and your goals. I’ll ask questions about your current concerns, history and what you hope to gain from therapy. We’ll begin building a roadmap for our work together in a supportive, judgment-free and confidential space. Read more about my approach.

  • How much does therapy cost, and do you accept insurance?

I’m currently in-network with Tricare/Triwest. For all other insurance, I’m an out-of-network, self-pay provider — many clients are able to receive partial reimbursement through their insurance plan, and I’m happy to provide a superbill you can submit for potential reimbursement. Check with your provider directly for details on your out-of-network coverage. Reach out for current session rate information.

  • How long does therapy last?

The length of therapy varies based on your needs and goals. Some clients benefit from short-term, solution-focused support, while others find longer-term work more helpful for deeper growth. We’ll regularly check in to ensure therapy stays effective and aligned with what you’re looking for.

  • Do you offer online therapy sessions?

Yes. I offer secure, HIPAA-compliant teletherapy video sessions for clients throughout California — a private, convenient way to get consistent support wherever you are.

  • What therapeutic approaches do you use?

I use a blend of evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), trauma-informed care, strategic intervention, mindfulness, positive psychology, family systems, and solution-focused therapy — always tailored to your specific needs. More on my approach here.

  • Do you work with both individuals and couples?

Yes, I provide therapy for individuals, adolescents and couples. Whether you’re working through personal issues, relationship conflict, or parenting and family challenges, I’ll help guide you toward clarity and meaningful change.

  • Do you offer parenting support or family therapy?

Absolutely. I support parents with communication tools, boundary-setting and problem-solving strategies, and can offer family sessions to strengthen relationships and improve dynamics at home. I also offer parenting intensives.

  • Is therapy confidential?

Yes. Everything shared in therapy is confidential, with a few legal exceptions (such as risk of harm to self or others). I’ll review these guidelines in our first session so you feel fully informed.

  • Are you a licensed therapist?

Yes — I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California (Kimberley ‘Kim” Jones LMFT #37708), with over 26 years of clinical experience. You can verify any California therapist’s license directly through the BBS license lookup.

  • Do I have to be in San Diego to see you for counseling?

As a California licensed therapist (LMFT), I work with clients located anywhere in California. My clients connect with me through online therapy using a secure HIPAA-compliant video platform. I serve many clients in the San Diego area, as well as throughout Southern California and the San Francisco Bay area. Read more about Why Online Therapy is Just as Effective as In-Person Counseling.

  • What if I need to cancel or reschedule a session?

Life happens — reach out as soon as you’re able to reschedule, and we’ll find a time that works. I’ll walk you through my specific cancellation policy when we first connect, so there are no surprises.

  • How do I get started?

Getting started is simple. Just contact me to schedule a free consultation or request book your first appointment directly. My free consultation is a chance for us to talk, answer any questions as well as make sure we’re a good fit. I currently have openings available.
